Re: home made rock crusher advice needed Think you might want to check out trip hammer crushers first. Other types require seriously hard (aka expensive) steel. Trip hammer types just use a cam to lift and let go (drop) big steel rods or bars. Such bars can be hardened on buisiness end with hardening welding rod. Doc

It's just a super-sized version of the same detachable-link chain that feed grinders and most old farm equipment used. It ran it fine, albeit for only an hour or so but could have run it a lot longer. This was a successful "experiment", being the first time I had ever used the crusher. I picked mostly rock that fractured fairly easily although we did bust a few hard round rocks. I doubt my little unit would live a long life crushing super hard rock continuously.
